In 1999 a group of adventure sport enthusiasts realized their dream as they combined their years of work and experience to create Explornatura. Their goal was to make their passion, adventure sports, accessible to everyone. Explornatura continues to operate with this goal in mind – to offer a safe and exhilarating way to experience the tropical paradise of Costa Rica.

Below is a more detailed description about the internship qualifications, what you get out of it, and what your job will be.

Qualifications and Requirements

Undergraduate Students

  • If you are an undergraduate you must be classified as at least a Junior and you may still apply up until one year after graduation

Graduate Students

  • You must have proof of enrollment in a graduate studies program and you may still apply up until one year after graduation.

General

  • Minimum overall GPR of 2.5.
  • Must be willing to commit to a minimum of 7 weeks.
  • Speaking Spanish is looked favorably upon but not required.
  • An interest or experience in business, service, marketing, web design, tourism, or other related fields is necessary. You need to be out-going, a strong writer, comfortable at talking and communicating, and excited about the outdoors and the Explornatura product.

What you Get

  • A weekly stipend to help with meals and other expenses (the amount depends upon your location)
  • Airport pickup in San Jose
  • Free housing – either a room or apartment (type depends upon availability) or you can receive the cash equivalent and find housing on your own
  • One week of Spanish classes paid or if you are interested in taking classes full-time we will pay part of the cost (more information on the Spanish language schools below)
  • Travel between our 3 different offices (Turrialba, La Fortuna, and Dominical)
  • All tours for free (if there is space)
  • Discounted prices for your family and friends if they visit you
  • Free training in any computer programs or different systems that we use

What we do

We are an adventure tourism company operating throughout Costa Rica. We have three offices in different locations throughout the country – Turrialba, La Fortuna, and Dominical. We do everything from mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding to white water rafting, canyoning, and kayaking (just to name a few of our tours).

Job Description

As an intern you will have the opportunity to live and experience Costa Rica as a true Tico. Your experience will begin in Turrialba which is where the main office for Explornatura is located. In Turrialba you will be familiarized with the Explornatura product. You will go on every tour that we offer within the first week or two so that you know what it is that we offer and will be better able to sell it. Your job will vary slightly depending upon your individual interests and backgrounds but the basic job for any intern will be the same. Your main responsibility is to be the liaison between a local branch school of the Adventure Education Center (AEC) and Explornatura. You will be interacting with the students on a daily basis helping to promote, develop, and sell Explornatura’s product. This will entail anything from helping to change and develop the packages that we already offer to helping develop new marketing and promotional strategies to working with other schools and groups from around the world. Once you are acclimated and your training is completed you will then be able to move around to the different offices in the different locations that we have. Your job in the other offices will be basically the same but vary based upon the individual needs of the different locations at that time.

We understand and appreciate that each individual intern is coming from a different background and so has different attributes and interests. We are ready and willing to work with you to fine tune this work experience so that it can be the best fit for you and us.
